R&D Technician
Role Overview:
- Support the identification, screening, and development of promising microbial strains towards commercial-scale production within MiAlgae’s Research & Development team.
- Perform strain screening and development workflows across a wide variety of microorganisms, including media preparation, microbiological plating, growth optimisation, and fermentation analysis.
- Apply analytical techniques, including gas chromatography, to assess fermentations and support the development of high-value microbial products.
- Maintain accurate data management and scientific documentation, and communicate findings effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Support wider laboratory activities including reagent preparation, equipment calibration, and general laboratory maintenance, gaining exposure to a broad range of microbiological, fermentation, and engineering biology techniques.
- Contribute to safe and compliant laboratory operations through COSHH and risk assessments, participation in standard operating procedure development, and adherence to laboratory health and safety requirements.
Requirements:
- Undergraduate, MSC, or equivalent industrial experience in biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, or a related discipline.

- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with experience working effectively within teams
- Ability to maintain detailed scientific documentation
- Ability to communicate technical information clearly to a broad audience
Desirable:
- Experience with microbiology, aseptic handling, molecular biology, or strain development
- Experience working with multiple microbial hosts, including two or more of yeast, bacteria and microalgae
- Experience independently performing research projects from start to finish – design, execution, analysis, and communication
- Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to offer solutions

Production Operator
Role Overview:
- Support the safe, efficient, and consistent production of MiAlgae’s omega-3 product within the Production Team, contributing to the successful commercialisation of current and future products.
- Carry out production activities including manufacturing equipment set-up and operation, clean-in-place (CIP), sterilisation-in-place (SIP), and operation of sterilisation equipment and bioreactors.
- Prepare growth media to standard recipes, seed bioreactors with inoculum, and carry out routine sampling and monitoring of production processes in accordance with quality control requirements.
- Monitor, collate, and report process outputs and production data, maintaining accurate batch records, shift reports, process trackers, and other required documentation in line with good documentation practices.
- Carry out hygienic manufacturing activities, facility cleaning, and routine equipment maintenance to ensure production processes operate safely, efficiently, and in accordance with food safety and quality standards.
- Apply practical problem-solving skills to identify and support the resolution of basic mechanical, process, and equipment issues, escalating problems where appropriate and working with colleagues to keep production running as planned.
- Work effectively within a shift-based production environment, following standardised work methods and procedures, meeting time-sensitive production deadlines, and communicating progress clearly to Production Team Leaders and other members of the team.
- Contribute to safe and compliant production operations by following SOPs, risk assessments, permit-to-work requirements, and site health and safety procedures, while actively supporting MiAlgae’s wider safety culture.
- Contribute to the improvement of production and quality control procedures and collaborate with other departments where required to support continuous improvement and business objectives.
Requirements:
- HND level education (or equivalent practical experience) in a relevant scientific, technical, engineering, manufacturing, or related discipline.
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in an industrial production or manufacturing environment.
- Practical experience with production processes such as fermentation, CIP, SIP, pasteurisation, filtration, centrifugation, or similar operations.
- Experience working safely to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) within a regulated production or manufacturing environment.
- Good problem-solving skills, with the ability to understand and respond to basic scientific, engineering, process, or equipment-related problems.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a shift team.
- Experience working within the food, beverage, pharmaceutical, chemical, biotechnology, or similar industries.
- Experience operating production equipment such as bioreactors, fermentation systems, filtration or centrifugation equipment.
- Experience operating a forklift truck and holding a valid FLT licence.
- Full, clean driving licence.
- Interest in biotechnology, sustainable manufacturing, and MiAlgae’s mission to develop more sustainable sources of omega-3.A positive, flexible, and practical approach to work, with a willingness to learn and take responsibility for maintaining high standards of production, quality, and safety.
- Strong organisational and time management skills, with the ability to maintain accurate records and meet time-sensitive production deadlines.
- Familiarity with GLP, GMP, or other regulated production environments.

- Experience with basic mechanical troubleshooting or equipment maintenance.
